Susan Atlee, age 83,
passed away peacefully and unexpectedly in her sleep, at her home in the early morning of September 16, 2014. Susan was born in Lancaster, Penn. in 1930. In 1962 she moved to Calif. with her husband, Chuck Atlee, to whom she was married for 62 years. Chuck and Susan raised a son, Robert, and a daughter, Barbara. The family spent time living in Mexico, Santa Cruz, Guatemala, and San Luis Obispo. She worked as a teacher in Arroyo Grande, and was active in community groups Mothers for Peace, San Luis Bike Club Tortoises, Central Coast Friends Meeting, NAMI, Book Club, and Population Connection. Susan never stopped reading and learning about the world, and was a generous and supportive presence in the lives of her friends, family, and neighbors. We will always remember and cherish her open mindedness and enthusiasm for life. A celebration of life will be held Friday Sep. 19, 2014 from 4-6 pm, at 5015 Jespersen Rd. off of Buckley Rd. Please bring finger-food and a chair. Instead of flowers, donations can be made to the American Friends Service Committee: 245 2nd St. NE, Washington D.C., 20002-5795.

Mrs. Atlee was one of my favorite teachers when I was younger. She always had a smile and was a very positive person!

I just found out!! Mrs. Atlee was one of my favorite people for sure. She was more than a teacher. I have thought of her so often through the years. She once traveled to Guam. When she returned, she had given me a small hand made bag that I still have to this day! I never really watched the news as a young person, until I took her class. Each day she asked each of us to watch the news. Write a very small summary, or just the headline of a local or national news story, or bring in a newspaper clipping. Smartest way to make young people keep up with current events and stay in tune with the world around them. I NEVER saw her without a smile but did see her get teary eyed about positive things, many times. I am blessed to have had her as part of my life and cannot say enough good things about her. Our world needs more of her. Love to her and her family.
