Nicholas Annecchini
Long time Arroyo Grande Valley resident Nick Annecchini passed away Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, surrounded by his family, just a month short of his 91st birthday.
He was born in Santa Barbara to Nick and Elise (Caldwell) Annecchini, the youngest of four sons and three younger sisters.
His first 13 years were spent living along the coast in Gaviota because his father was a section foreman in charge of maintaining the railroad tracks. Nick and his siblings attended Vista del Mar School.
His father was transferred to Oceano in 1935, where Nick then attended Arroyo Grande High School. Later, he started to work in the vegetable container business, a position held until he actually retired at age 88.
He met the love of his life, Dolly Benitez, in Oceano and they married in 1941 in Portland, Ore. Nick served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, with duty in Europe.
Following the War, he returned to south San Luis Obispo County, with his wife and son. The young family, now with two boys, moved to Arroyo Grande in 1950, where he and Dolly have resided ever since.
In addition to have worked at Ag Box, he was in a partnership of the 3M Real Estate (3M was Mom, Mario and Me).
As a veteran, Nick was active with the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Pismo Beach, as commander at various times, until the post closed. He was also a member of the Arroyo Grande American Legion, and a charter member of both the Italian Catholic Federation at St. Patrick's Church and Elks of Oceano.
For the past nine years, Dolly and Nick were close to and assisted by Delfina Zerate, who, without her assistance, would not have had the quality of life she provided. We, Nick's family, will always be grateful that she was a faithful, loving friend.
Nick is survived by his three sisters Margaret Rodriguez, Mary Smith and Georgina Silva (Louis); sons Dan (Joanne) and Mario; Dan and Joanne's children Kendall Martin (Brian), Nichole Sexton (Brian) and Dominic Annecchini (Melanie); great-grandchildren Ethan Martin, and Owen and Ella Sexton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers Daniel, Angelo and John; and wife, Dolly, who passed three years ago, just before their 68th anniversary.
Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2012, at Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel, 1239 Longbranch in Grover Beach. The recitation of the rosary will follow at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 501 Fair Oaks in Arroyo Grande.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 6, 2012, also at St. Patrick's Church.
Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 7, 2012, at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Santa Barbara.
