Woman killed in Colorado graduated from Arroyo Grande High School
Community members are mourning the loss of a former Central Coast resident police say was murdered over the weekend.
Investigators say 38-year-old Nathan Yager killed his wife Melinda Tackett-Yager Friday afternoon in Paonia, Colorado. Melinda graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 1995 and moved to Colorado in 2008. The couple had been going through a divorce. Investigators say Melinda had tried to get a restraining order against her husband.
An arrest affidavit says the two were in court Friday morning. Yager turned himself into authorities on Saturday. He faces a charge of first degree murder as an act of domestic violence. Local domestic violence experts say trying to get out of a violent relationship can be dangerous.
"We do a lot of safety planning with women and men who are trying to leave situations, when they're trying to get those restraining orders. When it comes to light was has been happening in this relationship, it just makes it really volatile," said Beth Raub with the San Luis Obispo Women's Shelter.
Melinda has a one year old daughter named Kaylee. She is currently in the custody of family members. The family issued this statement:
"Our family extends thanks to our friends and loved ones for their prayers and support as we deal with this horrible tragedy. Our main focus now is assuring that Melinda's one-year-old daughter Kaylee is with family and will have a bright future."
The Tackett family has set up an account in Arroyo Grande to help Melinda's daughter, Kaylee. For more information on how you can help, click here.
The news hits close to home for us as well, Melinda's brother Matt Tackett is salesperson here at KSBY. Our thoughts go out to him and his family.
