It's always a little shocking when someone younger than me passes away. I sat for him when he was an adolescent and I was a mere teenager when his parents lived in Los Berros Canyon. He was so much fun and such a sweet boy! I didn't know him as an adult, but I know that he was being raised well and must have been an amazing man! My thoughts and prayers are with you in your grief, dear Katie and Stan.

What can I say. He was a brother. I met him at a AGHS football game. We both wanted to party at Avila Beach (Old Port) so we climbed into my POS Capri and hit the beach. Plenty of girls and friends, we had a good time. We hung out, got along and partied for the next few years always challenging each other. We became family. His mom, Katie, would yell at both of us. Mackie was always causing trouble. I was damage control. Well, at least I thought that way. I asked him once, "Do you want to burn the candle or light it from both end's?", Mackie's response, " Burn that thing from both end's or your not LIVING". My brother. Anyway, thanks to all of you that remember him. I was there the day he passed and was fortunate enough to see him again still living the life we all thought we were going to live out of high school.

I didn't know Mackie but live in Oakland and am a regular runner at the cemetery, I somehow stumbled upon his grave today and was really impressed by the quote on his grave. Unbelievable to go down this path and find his story online. Some souls live on - "Live shouldn't be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body but rather to skid in broadside thoroughly used up totally worn out and loudly shouting 'wow' what a ride Thank You Lord. I agree, thank you Lucien Mackie.
