Joyce was born April 13,1938 in Piqua, Ohio. Because she lived on a far, she spent her early years largely with her parents, her brother Miles, who was nine years older, and her younger sister Nona. The entire Weaver family was very active in the local Church of God.
In high school Joyce participated in the orchestra, G. A. A. and the National Honor Society. She attended Anderson College in Indiana, where whe met Cliff Koehn, whom she was married to for 11 years.
Following her graduation they married and lived locally for a year before mving to California. In 1963 they joyfully welcomed baby Jill.
Having taught briefly in Indiana and central California, Joyce was hired by the Lucia Mar School District. She taught French and occasionally history for nearly 35 years at Arroyo Grande High School, where she was also a loyal Eagle sports fan. Joyce attended many summer sessions at UCSB and in Rance in order to earn her masters degrees in Frence and in education. Joyce retired in 1998.
She was very active in St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, sang in the choir and kept the gardens beautiful. Joyce's passions were muic, sports and gardening. She lived in Arroyo Grande over 45 years until her death from pancreatic cancer on Thanksgiving day.
Her parents, sister and brother predeceased Joyce. She is survived by her daughter Jill of Arroyo Grande, her sister-ion-law Peggy of Florida and several nieces and nephews and friends from both school and church.

I’ve only just learned of this website and consequently of Madame Koehn’s untimely passing in 2011. I am saddened by the loss. I hope her family and friends may be comforted to know what a joyfully indelible mark she made upon my life. She was my French teacher for four years (from 1987-1991), and she also taught two of my older brothers. Her flamboyant humor, great personal warmth, and dedication as a teacher stand strong in my memory. I loved her classes and my conversations with her. She inspired my participation in the French club, where I delighted in hearing about her summer studies and travels in France. She really taught us culture as well as language. Nearly thirty years later, I can still recite the pledge to the American flag in French, just as we did in her homeroom. On Fridays, I regularly echo her jubilant weekending recitation (en Français, bien sûr!) of the American TGIF: <<À Dieu merci c’est Vendredi!>>

Madame Koehn was a kind and generous woman, with a strong sense of justice as well as play. I remember she gave me a ride home once after school when I was stranded, even though I lived way out in the boondocks around 227. She was and remains an inspiring and transformative figure in my life. As with all of my greatest teachers, I have undying love, gratitude, and respect for her. Knowing that she rests in peace with God, I anticipate a joyous reunion someday. Until then…

<<Adieu, Madame Koehn. Vous étiez une professeure excellente et une brave dame. Que Dieu vous bénisse éternellement.>>

I remember her smile as she briskly walked through the halls with that spring in her step...

I was in her very last class and she was still as happy go lucky as ever apparently! Ill never forget a class mate was just horrible like actually tried to get in trouble and she just waved it off and blamed it all on the wind! Classic!
