Howard Freeman Mehlschau was born in August 1937 at the Airport Hospital in Santa Maria, and died after a brief battle with prostate cancer Monday, April 23, 2012. Howard was a third generation Nipomo farmer. His grandfather, Hans Mehlschau, came to Nipomo in 1880 from Denmark. Howard''s family has lived on Mehlschau Road in Nipomo since 1892. He attended Nipomo Elementary School and graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 1956. He attended Cal Poly long enough to pledge to the Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity. Howard married Donna Brummel in September 1961 and was drafted into the U.S. Army in December 1961. After serving his Army stint, he went into farming, in and around Nipomo. After he retired from farming, Howard was the co-owner of Big M Tire in Guadalupe. He always had a project he was working on. In addition to keeping the farm equipment in good repair, he found time to work on a dragster, dune buggy, 56 Nomad, Miller inboard boat, 34 Buick 2-door convertible, and in progress was a 34 Buick 4-door convertible. Howard belonged to The Buick Club of America and the Buick Driving Enthusiasts. He participated with fellow Bent Axle club members in transporting wounded vets from the airport to the beach for surfing lessons (Amazing Surf Adventures). When road tripping with family and/or friends, Howard was always ready to explore and didn''t care if he was camping in a tent or five star hotel. The children that accompanied the Mehlschau family on trips could always count on Howard for sweets. Howard and Donna made several cross-country trips in the ''˜34 Buick to tour different areas of the U.S. and Canada. In addition to his wife, Donna, Howard leaves three children Diane Adam (Kieran), Kathleen Mehlschau and Eric Mehlschau; and four grandchildren Evan Mehlschau, Amy Mehlschau, Mattie Adam and Meryl Adam. He also leaves a sister, Marian Manari (Michele); dog, Riley; and all of his buddies from the coffee crew, farming, car club, hunting, friends and neighbors, school and fraternity brothers.
