Frank Edward Sullivan, 78, passed away peacefully Thursday, June 6, 2013, at home in Grover Beach. He was the fourth of six children born to Ralph and Blanche Sullivan in Minneapolis, Minn. The Sullivan family relocated to San Luis Obispo in 1947, where Frank attended San Luis Obispo High School, then Cal Poly through his freshman year. In 1954, he started a required two-year military obligation in the U.S. Naval Reserve, having served most of it on the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Bremerton as an I.C. Electrician. While in the Navy, he also taught remedial math and discovered his future career. After the Navy, he returned to school. Frank graduated from San Jose State University in 1960, with a bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology. He was soon employed by Philco in the aerospace industry, until he returned to San Jose State, where he earned his master's degree and teaching credential. While employed by Philco, Frank met and dated his future wife, Jacquelyn Karl. The couple married in 1963, then relocated to the Central Coast when Frank was offered a position at Arroyo Grande High School. He taught typing, business and computer classes for 29 years. Frank served as the Junior Varsity Basketball Coach for six seasons and the Teacher Association President for one year. During summers and holidays, he was a tour guide at Hearst Castle for 28 years. Frank is survived by his wife, Jacky; daughter, Lynne VanArtsdalen (Clay); son, Tom Sullivan (Suzanne); grandchildren Victoria, Lauren, Taylyn, Brandon and Trent; brother, Tom; and sisters Pat and Ann. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m., followed by a celebratory memorial Mass at 10 a.m., Friday, June 21, 2013, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 501 Fair Oaks in Arroyo Grande. Donations may be made in Frank's name to Central Coast Hospice in San Luis Obispo or St. Patrick's School in Arroyo Grande.

To the Sullivan Family,
I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your husband, father and grandfather. He was such a wonderful man. I spent an hour with him every day of my high school career. I loved seeing him at Mass on the weekends. I graduated 27 years ago, but when I saw him at St.Pat's Thrift store, a couple years ago, he remembered my name and that of my sister. He was such a good teacher and a fantastic role model for the thousands of students he taught. May God grant you peace and comfort during this difficult time.

I lived right around the corner from the Sullivans as a kid, I used to play with Tom and Lynn. I remember they were a very nice family. RIP Mr. Sullivan.

Mr Sullivan was my typing teacher in the late 60's. What a great man. He was one of those classes you wanted to attend. I will never forget when he wanted to get my goat he would call me Gail Ros-a and I would tell him it was Rosa(Rose-a) Portuguese not Mexican. It always made him laugh. My deepest sympathy to his family.

I had Mr. Sullivan for typing my junior year in 1977. I have nothing but happy memories of him, he was such a nice teacher with such a quiet sense of humor. I remember him as being one of my very favorite teachers overall. He used to come by where I sat with my friend talking instead of working and he'd just shake his head at us. Such a kind teacher! I am so very sorry for his family's loss.

I just came across this posting!

Mr. Sullivan had a HUGE impact in my life. When I was a goofball in class he would ask me to stay after and chat. It was then that he would chat about life lessons. I clearly remember some of them today. That man was an Angel. What a blessing to have crossed paths with him. A big hug to the Sullivan family. I'm sorry I did not attend the service. I absolutely would have been there.
