Don Hirons
1927 ~ 2013
Don Hirons, who passed away Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, shared the events of his lifetime through the stories he loved so to tell. After quitting high school to serve in the Merchant Marines, Don completed high school, having graduated from Paso Robles High School. Years of adventure included running a Forest Service pack string in Oregon, serving in the U.S. Army during World War II and the "Korean Winter Games," and living the real cowboy life, working on the Bare Ranch in Modoc County. In 1954, he enrolled at Chico State College. There he met and married Carol Reed, who shared his passions for horses and cars for 58 years. Following graduation, he taught Industrial Arts and retired from Arroyo Grande High School. During these years, he rallied and auto-crossed with his family. He was also active in Y-Indian Guides and 4-H, having served as a leader in both organizations. In 1969, Don returned to his life-long love of horses, by adding ponies to his life. These times were filled with friends and competition, and eventually led to his great love of announcing horse shows. Don passed on his respect and love for all animals, love of family and guiding principles of life to his children and granddaughter. Don is survived by his wife, Carol; daughter, Nora Frushour (Jay); son, Matthew Hirons (Deborah); granddaughter, Sarah Frushour; and sister-in law, Kay Hirons. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, April 28, 2013, at the Wrangleretts Arena in Atascadero. Memorial donations should be sent to Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel, 1239 Longbranch Ave. Grover Beach, CA 93433. Marshall-Spoo 489-5552 Grover Beach
