Steven J. McClenathan, 59, of San Luis Obispo, passed away Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, at a local hospital. "Big Mac" was born in 1954 to Dr. C.K. and Mable McClenathan in San Luis Obispo. He attended Pacheco Elementary School, San Luis Obispo High School and graduated from Cuesta College and Cal Poly with a degree in political science. Steve worked for PG&E at Diablo Canyon as a nuclear security officer from 1983 to 2002, before he moved to Oakland, Calif., to work for Service Employees Union from 2002 to 2009. He returned to San Luis Obispo in 2009, where he worked as a private security officer until his death. Steve was very proud of being a native of San Luis Obispo. He did extensive research about the history of our area, including backgrounds of the street names, local establishments and haunted places and ghosts. He was a trustee of IOOF, member of ECV, Minor Historians, Native Sons of the Golden West and San Luis Obispo Historic Society. His was interested in local charity fund raising, antiques, movies and gardening. Steve leaves many good memories and good friends at Spike's Pub. Steve is survived by his son, Ethan Schott (Roxanne); sisters Dian Robinson (Tim) and Lisa Schmitz (Ray); granddaughter, Dakota; nephew, Alexander Schmitz; and nieces Cassie Brooks, Katie and Allyson Schmitz and Rachel Robinson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. C.K. McClenathan and Mable McClenathan. A celebration of life will be held in January 2014.
