Steve passed away peacefully Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at his Morro Bay home.
He was born in January 1948 in Memphis, Tenn., and shortly after, moved with his family to California. Steve was a resident of Shell Beach and Grover Beach from 1958 to 1965 and had lived in Morro Bay since 1978. He graduated from Titusville High School in Florida in 1966 and then from Brevard Community College and Orange Coast Community College.
Steve worked for MacDonald Douglas at the Kennedy Space Center and witnessed the 1969 launch of Apollo 11 - the first rocket to place a man on the moon.
Steve was proud of both his status as a Vietnam era conscientious objector and U.S. Army helicopter medic. He was a union carpenter for many years. Steve enjoyed Scrabble, surfing and fishing. He was the author of the screenplay, "Nobody's Perfect," based upon his experiences as one of the last men drafted into the Army. Steve was known for his humor and intelligence.
Steve is survived by a large and extended family including his wife and best friend of 24 years, Mary Whiteford; daughter, Acacia (Tim) Carras; grandson, Zane Carras; mother, Dorothy Dean Alley Montgomery Phillips; father, Raymond Alley; brothers Ray (Nyla), Tom, Jim, and Dan Alley and Bruce (Darlene)Montgomery; sisters Barbra (Charlie) Boyd, Annette, Gail and Melanie Montgomery and Kathy Kibbey.
He is also survived by brothers-in-law, Bob Whiteford and Robert Caltabiano; uncles and aunts Richard (Margie), Judson (Shirley), and Virgil (Linda) Emerson, and Abby (Bobby) Hardee and numerous cousins; and step-father, Dale (Bridget) Montgomery.
He is further survived by nieces and nephews Shannon (Joe) Hurtado, David (Crystal) Alley, Deni Alley, Christina (Justin) Whisman, Eric Wozniak, Natalie and William Kibbey, Kyle (Morgan) Montgomery, Megan (Jereme) Roach, Paul Cardenas and Nicholas Cordero; great nieces and nephews Alexis and Natalie Hurtado, Jared and Lucas Alley, Jalen and Deja Jones and Jaydin and Makenna Whisman.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008, at the San Luis United Methodist Church, 1515 Fredericks St., in San Luis Obispo. Steve was a humanitarian with a kind heart.
