Richard H. Rhyne was born in December 1931 to Bertie and Henry Rhyne in Drumright, Okla., and died Wednesday, July 3, 2013. His love of the sea led him to the U.S. Coast Guard, where he served from 1949 to 1953 in Connecticut, Hawaii and the Marshall Islands. He served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter, the Basswood, and was awarded the Good conduct Medal. Soon after his service, he joined the local Laborer's Union, which he was a member for over 50 years, and had worked on several projects, such as Vandenberg's SLC-6, Diablo Canyon and Cal Poly. Upon retirement from the union, he worked for his dear friend Donnie Walters, for 32 years. Dick is survived by his wife of 38 years, Shirley; brother, Dale Rhyne (Donna) of Twin Falls, Idaho; two sisters Wanda Curtis of Butte Falls, Ore.; and Audrey Irwin (Gene) of Salem, Ore.; son, Kenneth; daughters Katrina and Christy; stepsons Jim Chambers (Patti) and David Chambers (Leila); and step-grandsons Jimmy and Billy. He was preceded in death by his father, Henry; mother, Bertie; and brother, J.O. Young. A remembrance service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel, 1239 Longbranch in Grover Beach.
