Mark Allan Thomas, age 50, a resident of Arroyo Grande passed away on Friday, Dec 11, 2009. He was a 1978 graduate of Arroyo Grande High School. Mark was an avid roller hockey player with the local Pismo Beach team in his youth and he could often be seen roller-blading along the streets of Pismo Beach or walking his faithful companion Skye at the park or on the beach. He had many talents and a variety of interests including scuba diving, surfing, boating, and flying helicopters. He had recently completed all the requirements for a helicopter pilot license after soloing many times lacking only the required number of night flying hours. Mark was also a skilled mechanic and he loved working on cars; especially Mustangs. For a time he operated a tune-up shop in Grover Beach and later had an auto detail shop in Pismo Beach. Mark was employed as a maintenance supervisor for 17 years at the Edgewater Inn in Pismo Beach where he was respected and admired by his fellow employees and was known for always being courteous and helpful to co-workers and guests.
Mark is survived by his daughter, Sarah; mother, Judy Hearn; step-father Hardy Hearn; brother, Ken Thomas and nephews Ethan and Caleb Thomas. Marks father, Allan W. Thomas, preceded him in death several years ago. Mark was loved by many and will remain in our hearts forever.
God does not send the tragedies,
but He sends us the strength and
faith to cope with tragedy and
friends to assure that we do not
grieve or cry alone.
A memorial for family and friends will be held at 3pm on Saturday, January 9th, 2010 at the Edgewater Inn Sky Room in Pismo Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark's name to the Santa Maria Humane Society or the Woods Animal Shelter in San Luis Obispo.

I dated Mark for a few years in the early 80's. His kindness is what I will always remember about him. He never failed to act like a gentleman even when I was not acting like a lady. Although I had not seen him since that time I have thought of him often. RIP Mark-You touched many lives and you will be missed.

I was good friends with Mark just after he graduated HS. I went to one of his roller hockey games in Fresno with him and Chuck - that was fun. He was always laughing and making jokes. He was a lot of fun to be with as were Chuck and John (his cousin). He used to always play The Cars in his Trans-Am, so I think of him a lot when I hear that album. I recently emailed him on FB - first time I talked to him in 30 years. I am so sad to hear that he passed away...very sad.

My friends and I used to watch Mark (and others) play roller hockey at the skating rink in Pismo. He was always a cutie and very nice and funny too. So sad...too young.

I met Mark in the summer of 1978 when he came to Fort Smith, Arkansas to play roller hockey at Jack's Skate Land. We hit it off right away and ended up dating for about 5 months. After Christmas he decided to return to California and I was broken hearted but the time we spent together was so great! He was always a gentleman and we were always laughing. My mom said he had "smiling eyes". He was one of a kin! We reconnected in the mid 90's after I tracked him down through his mom. I couldn't believe it when he returned my call. We spoke often and even talked about a visit but it wasn't meant to be. I will always have fond memories of my high school sweetheart. I am sure his absence has left a hole in many hearts. Rest in peace my sweet friend.
