MABEL LOUISE
BRISCOE
1914-2006
Mabel Louise Briscoe, age 92, passed away November 30, 2006. Cremation is under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. At her request no services were held.
Mabel was born Sept 12, 1914 in Oneida, N.Y. She was the youngest of four children of William and Frances (Ruth) Kraft. On June 28, 1923 the Kraft family an a brother of Mr. Kraft drove to Atascadero, California, arriving on August 6th.
It was an exciting adventure for young Mabel. In later years she wrote an account trip as seen from the eyes of an 8 year old along with notes her mother had written. She spoke of roads of pavement, gravel, dirt and even sand. Speed limits of 35 and 40 miles an hour and gasoline from 16 to 25 cents a gallon. With motels scarce, they depended mostly on a large tent an car seats that Mr. Kraft had purchased in 1922. In 1927 Mr. Kraft purchased a grocery store on Lincoln St., in Santa Maria, CA., and then moved his family there. Mabel's grammar school years were spent in Oncida, Atascadero and Santa Maria. She graduated from Santa Maria High School in January 1933.
Mabel met Martin Briscoe when she was a junior in high school and they were married in San Luis Obispo, California August 30, 1933. They had two children, Richard Allen on Sept. 6, 1935 and Ronald Martin on May 27, 1938. In 1945 her husband, Martin, joined the Marine Corp and served a year in the Pacific Arena and China. On his return he moved his family to Ukiah, California, where he worked as a truck mechanic for Mendocino County, California. In 1968 they transferred to Point Arena and bought a home in Gualala, California.
On returning to the Central Coast where they bought a home in Sunrise Terrace in Arroyo Grande. They lived there until June 2002 when they left their many dear friends and two dear nieces, Joyce Gamison and Elaine Mainard and her husband Frank of Santa Maria and moved to Boise, Idaho.
Mabel is survived by her son Richard Briscoe of Baker City, Oregon. Two grandchildren, six great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild, and special friend Garric (Fritz) Heryford and his wife Linda of Oraville, California, along with her beloved nieces.
She was preceded in death by her husband Martin and son Ronald.
Arrangements were under the direction of Cloverdale Funeral Home. Published in Santa Maria Times on December 6, 2006
