Please Feel Free To Leave A Comment Or A Memory You Had With Scotty~
Ernest E. Scott, 101, was born in Arroyo Grande, and passed away of natural causes Thursday, March 6, 2014. Ernest, known to most as "Scotty," graduated from Arroyo Grande High School and Cal Poly, where he earned his Certificate of Civil Engineering. In the early days, he ranched, both locally and in the Carrizo Plains, and did quick silver mining in the Adelaide district near Paso Robles. His main career, however, turned out to be with the Southern Pacific Railroad, where he worked and lived in San Luis Obispo. In the beginning, Scotty worked as a Brakeman and ended his career as a Conductor of both freight and passenger trains at the time he retired, about 36 years ago after 31 years of service. Scotty had a delightful sense of humor and always entertained his family and friends with many Southern colloquialisms, which he inherited from his Missouri and Kentucky ancestors. Among many others, a favorite was "If you're a gonna hitch up the cart, you might as well go for a ride." He certainly did that - and did it well! Scotty was a member of the Elks Club in San Luis Obispo for many years. He and his wife, Mary Jane, enjoyed the many social activities offered by the Elks and up until a few years ago joined friends for lunch there a couple of times a week. Scotty and Mary Jane were also members of Zion Lutheran Church in San Luis Obispo. They also liked to travel, and took trips to Europe, Mexico and Canada, as well as to most states in the USA. They owned a travel trailer for many years and belonged to a camper club and took many group trips with San Luis Obispo friends. Earlier in Scotty's life he built a small "ski" boat in his garage and the whole family learned to water ski, having enjoyed many happy weekends at Nacimiento Lake. In the old days, Scotty would take the family on day trips up the coast to get abalone or to Pismo for clams. He loved gathering the clan at the end of the day to fix fried abalone or clam chowder. He also liked to fish and hunt and spent much of his free time in the outdoors. Scotty and Mary Jane were members of the Morro Bay Golf Club for many years and played golf several times a week. They also like to play at Laguna Lake and spent many hours with friends on the golf course. Scotty is survived by his daughter, Flora Cunningham; grandchildren Dorothy Jones (Dave), Susan Toth (Louie), Katie Hertfelder (Dana), Scott Ingman, Stephen Cunningham and Paul Alvarez; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Eve May Scott; wife, Mary Jane; daughter, Judy Alvarez; and sisters Eva Fahey and Grace McChesney. The service will start at 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2014, at the Los Osos Valley Mortuary Chapel at Los Osos Valley Memorial Park, 2260 Los Osos Valley Road in Los Osos, followed by burial and a reception. Los Osos Valley 528-1500 Los Osos
