Edward H. Campodonico (05/20/1920 - 09/07/2011)
May 20, 1920 ~ September 7, 2011
Edward Campodonico also known as "Campy" to family and friends died suddenly September 7th at Arroyo Grande Hospital. He was 91.
Campy was born May 20, 1920 in Upper Los Berros Canyon to parents Frank and Lottie Campodonico. He attended elementary schools in Lower Los Berros and graduated from Arroyo Grande High School in 1938. He was a lifelong farmer and rancher who grew/raised Hereford cattle, garbanzo beans, wheat, and most recently avocados. He worked on his avocado ranch up until the day he died. Campy was a member of the California Fire Watershed Council, Dry Bean Advisory Committee, California Cattlemens' Association, a founding member of the San Luis Obispo County Range Improvement Association, Calavo Growers, American Quarter Horse Association, Past Member of the San Luis Obispo County Grand Jury, Charter member of the Nipomo Men's Club and Past President of the San Luis Obispo County Farm Bureau. Campy was also a former 4-H leader and a supporter of the Future Farmers of America. He was proud to have his cattle shown by 4-H and FFA members in the "local bred class" at the Santa Barbara County Fair.
Campy was happiest when he had his family around him and was very proud of his family. One other love he had was being horseback, to work cattle with his family and also to work the cattle of friends and neighbors. If he was on top of his bulldozer making roads it always brought him a smile and a sense of accomplishment. Campy also enjoyed being on the fire line at prescribed burns. We all believed he could fix anything that was broken.
Campy is survived by his wife of 47 years, Ernie Mae, son Gary Nightingale (Kathy), daughter Kristin Welch (Rich), his sister Doris Metz; his grandchildren Renli Pope (BJ), Jimmy Nightingale (Cristin), Corie Nightingale, Bryan Welch , Ashley Nightingale, Aaron Nightingale and great grandson, Grady Pope. Campy also had a wonderful extended family which includes the Bill Summerfield family of Arroyo Grande and the Steve Soares family of Santa Maria. He also leaves behind his faithful Border Collie, "Kate", who never left his side. He is preceded in death by parents, Frank and Lottie Campodonico; his sister Virginia Hourihan, and his son, Earl Nightingale.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in his name. There will be a celebration of life held Friday, September 16th 11:00 AM at the St.Joseph's Catholic Church 298 S. Thompson Avenue Nipomo, with a reception to follow at the Nipomo Men's Club corner of Tefft and Mallagh Streets Nipomo. Please bring your favorite memories of Campy to share.
