Derek Massey, 41, formerly of Paso Robles, was born in San Luis Obispo in December 1971, and was killed in a car accident Sunday, May 3, 2013, in Oregon. Derek attended local schools and served in both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Army. He was a highly decorated soldier, but the Army retired him due to injuries he sustained in Iraq. Derek loved his family, his service dog, Marley, scary movies, candy, Bob Marley, the beach, being silly and being a soldier. When he was young, he loved to work with his Papa Brown and Uncle Robin on their dive boats. Derek is survived by his children Dylan Goodwin (Kristen) of Paso Robles and Chelsea and Caleb Massey of Talent, Ore.; granddaughter, Audrie Goodwin; parents, Tommy and Laurie Massey of Creston; grandparents, Duane and Nancy Brown; sister, Darcy Stotesbery (Troy); nephews Tanner and Tyler; uncles Chris and Robin Brown and Leon and Ron Massey; and an extensive family. He is also survived by Christy Massey, Aubrey Wyrick and Amber Goodwin, who were all loved by him and his family. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Daymon and Lola Massey; and uncle, Dale Massey. Family and friends are invited to join us for a celebration of Derek's life at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 23, 2013, at Shamel Park in Cambria.
