Please Feel Free To Leave A Comment Or A Memory You Had With Big Daddy Dave- Handsome Dave~
David Harper Loomis, also known to his family as Big Daddy Dave and to friends as Handsome Dave, age 76, was born in San Luis Obispo on July 15, 1938, and resided in Arroyo Grande until he passed away with family at his side from heart failure on Saturday, July 26th, 2014, at Arroyo Grande Hospital. He attended Arroyo Grande High School, graduating in 1956, and loved to hang out at the Arroyo Grande Drug Store soda fountain, where he was likely to be affectionately badgered by his many cousins. He went on to graduate from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, where he belonged to Delta Sigma Phi, with a bachelor's degree in Social Science. He then began working for the family business, E.C. Loomis and Son feed store, where he helped start Loomix, Inc., and worked there until 1991. He went on to work with several entrepreneurial ventures in the area of technology, including helping to manage his son's produce business, until his passing.
He enjoyed camping and being outdoors, including jumping into the icy Merced River as well as going on a mule packing trip up to 13,000 ft. above sea level. Sports were among his favorite pastimes, especially watching the San Francisco Giants and 49ers. He also attended many sports events at Cal Poly with family and friends, and he coached Babe Ruth baseball for several years. He was a licensed pilot for many years and loved flying so much that he shared ownership in a small Cessna plane during that time. He enjoyed barbecuing for many civic and family occasions, including the Arroyo Grande Harvest Festival, family weddings, and St. Barnabas Church, and if you played your cards right, he'd let you have a little sample before anyone else.
He was a life-long member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, where his five children were baptized. He was very involved with Alcoholics Anonymous for over 30 years, where it became his passion to help and counsel others. Most importantly, he knew the only way to really live life was to give it over to God and to do His will, and David's life exemplified that principle. As all who knew him well would agree, David was known for his wonderful sense of humor, hearty laugh, and his willingness to always help his friends, family and community whenever needed.
David is survived by his wife Sherry; his 5 children, Steve Loomis, Pamela Coston, Mark Loomis, Rick Loomis, and Christina Loomis Cosca; and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Clinton "Buster" Loomis, in 1951, and by his mother, Maud "Moonie" Loomis, in 1991.
A viewing will be held from 10:00 am - 12:00 pm on Friday, August 1st at Marshall-Spoo Sunset Funeral Chapel, 1239 Longbranch, in Grover Beach. Following the viewing will be a celebration of David's life at Steve Loomis' Barn at 8451 Huasna Road in Arroyo Grande. It was also David's wish to have a service at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Arroyo Grande, which will be held on Saturday, August 2nd at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.
