Sparks received from the Mexican government in 1843. Charles was born in  Santa Maria in 1950. He attended Arroyo Grande Elementary School,  Arroyo Grande High School and Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, graduating in  1973 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He was a past president of the  South County Historical Society, a member of D.A.N.A. and the Republican  Party, and a parishioner of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Arroyo  Grande. For more than 50 years, he worked on the Porter Ranch, managing  it for the past 23 years, improving it immensely, and loving every inch  of it. Charles is survived by his beloved wife, Wanda; stepson, Zack  (Connie); step grandchildren, Ryan (Katie), Olivia, and Logan; brother,  John (Wendy); and his many cousins and friends. He was preceded in death  by his mother, Margaret; father, Asa; and brother, Christopher. A  rosary will be recited at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Arroyo Grande  at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated at  St. Patrick's at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013. Donations may be  made to the South County Historical Society, D.A.N.A., and St. Patrick's  Elementary School.
